Dear Judi,

I certainly did not intend give offense in my reply to Judith Gresham. Your expertise & willingness to help & share your valuable knowledge & time is what keeps RootsWeb going & it's much appreciated by many.

I noticed Crawford in her email because it's just down the road from Athens & we kids spent many hours prowling the Oglethorpe Co. courthouse in the 1960s as our mom was transcribing records & doing research to help support us five children. She built that hard-won knowledge into Heritage Papers & edited (read that WROTE) the weekly magazine Family Puzzlers for over 34 years. My sister Amy & I were involved in transcribing queries for her for many years, thus we learned a lot too. Now I'm the webmaster for the Heritage Papers website, trying to keep Mama's good work going, even though Puzzlers is no longer being published. It's at www.heritagepapers.us if anyone is interested.

Many people even now are not aware of Georgia's peculiarity about the towns NOT being in the county of the same name. I don't know how many in our area think that Madison (the town - about 40 miles south of Athens) is in Madison County, which borders Clarke County. The ones that I named in the email response are just a few of them! They were included as "eddification" as my grandfather used to say.

Regarding online subscriptions, my splurging in a subscription last year to the census images online at Ancestry has brought me more progress on lines distant from Georgia than any number of stamps & trips would have! My poor patient husband has been most indulgent when I get immersed into looking up things for people - just as I did for Judith. The thrill of the hunt, which you obviously well know!

So, Judi, please don't stop sharing & be proud of your accomplishments! They are certainly justified!

And please accept MY sincere apologies if I have offended you or anyone else with my answers!

May your holiday bring every cheer,
Eve

I must beg the lists pardon for inadvertantly making an
error, but it was not clarified if Crawford was a city, or a
county, if it is not given as the "city of such and such"
then one naturally assumes it is a county.

I am not privy to the names of cities in each and every
county in GA and have to rely on my huge genealogical library
for information, since I am mostly homebound due to a
muscle disease and severe arthritis. I also do not have
subscriptions to online services.

My research in GA has primarily been in Clarke County, a bit
in Henry County, and a bit also in Fayette County, mostly all
on my Roberts and Pound/s lines. Due to the homebound research,
I have a large library of research books on records and etc.

I did advise her to seek records in the Probate court if they
were minors. Sometimes notations are also found in the Minutes
of the court of the Ordinary, in some counties in some states.

I must confess to not being a genius on the geographical
location of each and every town, city, and it's location in
whatever county in which they are located in GA, and all other
states. I have, however, done quite well with my family
research and won the Genealogical Fair in Birmingham in
1991.

I have been doing family research for over 38 years
and used to have to do that undertaking the hard way, long
before information was on the internet.

We have a wonderful research library here in Birmingham,
it was voted one of the top ten in the nation. Due to my health
I am unable to go there as often as I would like to. So, I have to
rely on my own personal genealogical library and what I can
find on the net (sans online subscriptions).

If I unknowingly misled anyone, for that I do apologize.

Judi Parker, in AL
