They aren't shown on the 1850 Cobb census, so were perhaps here only
briefly. It's possible that James Wells came to Cobb while working with the
railroad, or for some other enterprise. Your guess would be as good as any
as to why they were here in 1844, but the railroad was my first thought.
Yes, Cobb is considered as being "near Atlanta", though I can't be sure if
it would have been considered "near" in the 1840s - and no, we have no birth
or death records prior to the state's mandate of 1919. In fact, we lost
most all our early county records during the war.
Hopefully there are other Wells researchers out there who can offer more on
this family. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

grandfather, George Washington Wells, was born in Cobb County, according to
one of his marriage records in IL. Of course, another said near Atlanta.
First of all, would Cobb County have been considered to be near Atlanta in
the mid 1800s? Secondly, does anyone have any information about the Wells
family in Cobb County?

Both of his parents were born in TN according to census records. They made
it up to Southern IL by 1853. Another curious thing - with the exception of
their last 2 children, who were born in IL, all children but George where
born in TN. 2 were older than George, 2 younger.

that George would know where he was born, but why would his parents pop into
Georgia for a few years and then go back to TN? Any help or ideas would be
appreciated. Thanks in advance!
