Joan,

I've not had a lot of spare time, but this is what I have found on your
family so far:

In 1860, Wells and Eliza were living in Dekalb County, and show on census
thus:

1860 Dekalb County, Georgia - Decatur District - PO Decatur - July 10,
1860 - page 344
647 - Whitmore, Wells, age 29; Dairy; $1500/400; born New York
Elizabeth, age 25; born England
Bowen, age 4, male; born LA?
Elizabeth, age 7 months; born Georgia

The above Bowen, enumerated as Whitmore, could possibly be the Hoy child to
whom you refer in your query. I have not been able to locate any of thest
two families in the 1850 census. If, indeed, Bowen were born in Louisiana
(census handwriting entry VERY difficult to interpret), it is possible that
either Mary Eliza(beth) Hoy, Wells Whitmore, or both may turn up there.

In 1860, Wells' parents were already in Cobb County and enumerated:
1860 Cobb County, Georgia - Marietta District - June 11, 1860 - page 236
110 - Whitmore, M. B., age 62; Farmer; $200/2500; born New York
Dolly, age 54; born New York
Winters, J. R., age 36; Miller; $1200/2500; born Georgia
C. N., age 30; born New York
W. T., age 1 (male); born Georgia

By the time of the 1870 census, Mary Eliza Hoy has apparently died, and
Wells has brought his two daughters to Marietta, where they are shown living
in the household of his parents. Note the son or stepson, Bowen, is gone
also.

1870 Cobb County, Georgia - City of Marietta - PO Marietta - June 6, 1860 -
page 302
109 - Whitmore, Moses B., age 73; (no occupation shown) /$800; born New York
Dollie, age 66; born Maryland
Wells B., age 40; Revenue? Collector; born New York
Lizzie D., age 10; At school; born Georgia
Lottie T., age 7; At School; born Georgia
and next door is Wells' sister's family:
108 - Winters, John R., age 45; Retail Grocer; $5000/800; born Georgia
Charlotte N., age 42; keeping house; born New York
Ellen M., age 8; born Georgia
Eliza N., age 5; born Ohio
Addie, age 2; born Georgia

The following year, Wells remarried.
From the Cobb County, Georgia, Marriage Index:
Whitmore, Wells B. married Nannie Edmonston - April 5, 1871 - Book A, page
312

By 1880, Wells parents had both died, and he and Nancy were living in
Cherokee County, where they were operating a hotel, according to the 1880
census. There appears to be no additional children in the household, but as
a note of interest, Wells stated on that census that his mother was born in
New Jersey. Wondering if his mother was actually Dolly, (whose place of
birth was given as both Maryland in 1870 and New York in 1860) or someone
else. I would also be curious to know if Nancy Edmonston was related to
Dolly Edmonston, and if so, how?

From Cobb County, Georgia, Cemeteries - Volume One
St. James Episcopal Church Cemetery - Marietta
#8862 - Whitmore, Elizabeth D. - December 23, 1859 - April 30, 1951
#8863 - Winters, John R. - May 31, 1824 - August 24, 1902
#8864 - Winters, Charlotte Whitmore - August 1828 - September 26, 1901
(8865 and 8866 are apparently Winters children who died young)
#8867 - Whitmore, Dolly Edmonston - January 3, 1804 - July 15, 1875
#8868 - Whitmore, Moses B. - April 15, 1798 - December 26, 1876
#8869 - Whitmore, Wells B. - May 5, 1830 - July 20, 1914
#8870 - Whitmore, Nannie A. - May 25, 1839 - March 17, 1915

If I am able to locate them in the 1850 census, I will get back to you. In
the meantime, if you have any ideas as to where to look other than New York,
Louisiana, and Georgia, let me know.

Much luck in your search,

Linda in Marietta

Both died in Marietta - Moses in 1876 and Dolly in 1875, and may be buried
in a local cemetery.

> Also searching for Great-Great-Grandparents, Wells Barnet Whitmore and
Mary Eliza Hoy, who lived in Marietta; two little girls were born to them
there - Elizabeth Dolly in 1859 and Lottie Theresa in 1862. Lottie was
married to Frederick Stephen Wallace in Canton, Cherokee Co., in 1883.

to Wells, as family records refer to his death at a tender age - perhaps
burial in a Marietta cemetery?
