Thanks John for an excellent report of your research on Rebecca Ann
Ricketson. Now, did you ever learn anything more about Benjamin Jacob
Ricketson? I'll be happy to share (and I might have some time ago with you)
my finding the reference to Seth Durham's statement that Benjamin Jacob
Ricketson was his son. Seth had several illigitimate children that he
either gave land to, or recorded the fact that he was the father. Nancy in
AZ

A few weeks ago, while I was away from home, I committed myself to checking
my records on Rebecca Ann Ricketson, daughter of John P. "Griffis" Ricketson
and Amanda Overstreet, and publishing the results of my research, which is
as
follows:

I have no record that Rebecca An Ricketson was ever married, but I feel
confident that she had at least two children who carried the surname of
Ricketson. Those children were John W. Ricketson, born about 1875, and
Jessie Ricketson, born May 1889.

In the 1880 Census of Lowndes County, Vol 15, ED 73, Sheet 19, Line 9,
Rebecca was listed as being age 27 and living at home with her parents, John
P. and M. A. Ricketson. There were three young children recorded as
grandchildren, living in the household, named John W. Ricketson, male, age
5;
R.A. (Rebecca Ann ?), female, age 2; and Edward, male, age 1. We feel
confident that one child, John W. Ricketson, was a son of Rebecca, and
probably the other two may have been her children, although they may also
have been the children of one of Rebecca's other sisters.

In the 1900 Census of Coffee County, Georgia, a Rebecca Ricketson is
recorded
as being age 43. She was enumerated as being a servant with Floyd Perry.
Additionally a child named Jesse C. Ricketson, age 11, born May 1889 was
also
enumerated with Perry Floyd which we believe was the son of Rebecca. John
W.
Ricketson was not recorded as living in that household. I don't seem to
have
located the census record for 1900 on John P. and Amanda Ricketson, so I
don't know if any of these grandchildren were still living with them at that
time or not.

In the 1910 census of Coffee County, Georgia, ED 41, City of Douglas,
Georgia, a Beckie Ricketson is recorded as being age 52, and born, Georgia.
She is listed as head of household with a son Jesse, age 20, born in
Georgia.
Also listed was a Munela (?), listed as being her mother, age 77, and born
in Georgia. Also listed was a John Lewis, age 26, born in Georgia, listed
as
being a border and laborer. Beckie reported that she was single and had 4
children, 4 of whom were still living. Munela reported that she had married
one time and had 10 children, 9 of whom were still living in 1910. Although
the name Munela may present doubt as to whether this is Martha Amanda
(Overstreet) Ricketson, various census records reflected her names as "M.
A.", and "Martha M.", we believe the name Munela was possibly a nickname.
John P. and Amanda Ricketson did have 10 children, so there is no doubt in
my
mind that this is the correct census record for Rebecca Ricketson and her
mother.

Grace Edes, author of William Ricketson and his descendants, records Rebecca
as being unmarried and having a son named John which supports our belief
that
the John W. Ricketson, recorded in the household of John P and Amanda
Ricketson in the 1880 census was the son of Rebecca. In the 1900 census
of
Coffee County, Douglas District #748 there was a John Ricketson, born July
1875 recorded as living in the household of Avy Ricketson (Sister of Rebecca
Ann Ricketson), born May 1874, along with a James Smith, born Jan 1873. We
believe that this John Ricketson is son of Rebecca Ann Ricketson who had a
younger sister named Avy Ricketson that was about the same age as John W.,
who married a Smith.

Based on the 1900 census record wherein Becky reported that she had four
children, we feel confident that John W. Ricketson, born 1875, and Jesse C.
Ricketson, born 1889 were children of Becky. This leads me to further
believe that the other two children reported as being grandchildren of John
P. and Amanda Ricketson in the 1880 census, named Edward Ricketson, born
about 1879 and R.A. (Rebecca Ann ?), born about 1878 were most likely
children of Rebecca Ricketson, all of whom must have been born out of
wedlock, based on the fact Rebecca reported that she was single with no
indication that she had ever been married.

I welcome any additional information that anyone may have to add to this
summary.

John Ricketson.
