More on the TENCH families who lived in Coweta County, GA;
>From the book "Abstracts of Old Ninety-Six and Abbeville District (SC)
Wills and Bonds", by P.Young (Wills on file at the Abbeville, SC
courthouse):
Margaret TENCH - Box 93 Pack 2300 -----On March 29, 1843 John
TENCH died intestate about the year 1826 leaving a widow Margaret and
two sets of children and that no administration was taken on his estate,
that lately his widow Margaret also died. (Letters in file to
follow) Letter to Mr. John TENCH
at Newnan, Georgia from Eliz. B. GRAY in Noxabee County, Mississippi,
Cooksville Nov 22, 1843:
" My dear brother, I expect by the time you receive this letter you
will think that I am getting to be very negligent as regards the
answering of your letters. I must confess that I am rather ashamed of
not answering your other letter, but if you do not receive this as soon
as you anticipated to have received it, do not attribute it to my
neglect. I received your letter on last thursday evening after it had
been at the ?? more than a week. I am gratified to write you that my
family has enjoyed extreme good health this year and was very sorry to
hear of the affliction of your family which I hope will not be there by
the time you receive this. You wrote for me to come which is entirely
out of my power. You wrote also for me to have Aggy and her child
appraised and send you the bill of appraisement, which I think entirely
useless as you and Mr. Lyon are well acquainted with the value of the
two negroes as I am or any person else. You also know her to be the
most indifferent of any of the negroes named in the deed, though not
withstanding whatever price you and Mr. Lyons put on her within reason I
will abide by. I have appointed you my attorney. I have had the power
of attorney wrote by an acting magistrate of the beat and approved by
the Clerk of the probate court which you will find enclosed in this
letter. If the negroes are sold I wish you to purchase Dannel (name?)
Mary (or Clary) and either of the four mentioned will do...if you get
either of the boys, which I rather you would if they ...(??)....The
negro that you purchase for me bring it on with you. I will pay the
expense from Carolina to your home and when you get home write to me and
I will send after it. If Mr. Lyons concludes to move to Perry County,
Alabama you can send the negro on with him as the distance will not be
so great, as the boys will not want to lose any time from school. My
children are all going to school except John...he started the first of
the month with his ...(??) to attend the lectures at Louisville,
Kentucky. Rheuben, Henry and John Gray was well when I heard from
them. The children send their respects to you and family. I will pay
you when I sell the cropthe account you have against the estate.
Elizabeth wishes to be remembered to her Aunt Gray. Brother do come and
see me nothing on earth would give me more pleasure than to see you.
Sincerely your sister, Eliz. B. Gray"

"Dear Brother, I now take my pen in hand to inform you that we have had
to part with our second daughter Nancy A. who died June 28th which is
the first death that we have witneswsed in our family but very little
sickness since we have been together, but thanks be to God for his
kindness to us for our lives, help and strength and being here. We are
all at present in intolerable health and we should allwise ??
on that great goodness power of that great and merciful God that
directs and manages all things as he pleases....I beseach you brothers
and sisters pray for us, as I will inform you that there is a great deal
of sickness in our secsion of county this summer and joining counties,
and very fatal what cause we can't tell. We have had fine seasons and
crops here. I have had a hard years work so far, I have cultivated
near about 40 acres with one horse and two little sons Henry and
William with there horses. Brother I received your letter that you sent
by cousin Thomas Harris which informed me you would endever to do what
you could for me pervided I would give you authority to do and act for
me so here I try to send you this power to collect
that little morsel which is due my of my father's estate. If I have any
right there including all of you brothers and sisters. I hope Samuel
you will manage it with
out any difficulty, which I never received one pennys worth but some
thirty or forty dollars but I care nothing about that Samuel. I wish
you to arrange this matter with James in peace and quitness as brothers
and do hope borther James you will study my right and claim to be just
as well as your own brother. Samuel I wish you to git this amount let
it be little or much as I have an opertunity of gitting it, brought to
me this fall or winter by Cousin Wm. Harris the preacher of the gospel
if you can make
this collection for me...send it by Mr. Wm. Harris and he will receipt
for me nothing more but remains your brother and sister until death.
Wm. Walker "
