General Wade Hampton fought in both the Revolutionary War and the War of
1812. He was the grandfather of Confederate General Wade Hampton who fought
during the War Between the States. He served first in the infantry and
then, after J.E.B. Stuart's death in 1864, commanded all of Lee's cavalry.
