"Albany Man's Mangled Body Found Near Creek Trestle Here"

Discovery of the mangled body of N. W. Wofford, 505 Tenth Ave, by two fishermen
at 6 a.m. Sunday near the Central of Georgia Railroad trestle spanning the
Kinchafoonee Creek, led to a Sunday Coroner's hearing in which a jury returned
a verdict that the man came to his death by being struck by a Central of
Georgia train, Dougherty County law enforcement officials revealed today.
According to Chief Deputy Sheriff Lamar Stewart and County police patrolman
James Faircloth, who investigated after the body was found by E. P. Sly and G.
T. Cleveland, Wofford was struck and killed at approximately 2:40 a.m. Sunday.
The body was discovered 100 yards north of the trestle on the east side of the
railroad, lying face down. The left arm was virtually severed and the body had
severe wounds in the back and abdomen, investigators said. The body was
identified by Mr. Wofford's father.
Mr. Wofford had been boat riding late Saturday afternoon with a companion,
Louie Edd Morris, 533 Eighth Ave., and the latter made a statement to Deputy
Stewart and Patrolman Faircloth. Morris said he and Wofford rented a boat about
5:30 p.m., got lost on the creek when the motor failed and paddled back to the
creek bridge from which they proceeed to an eating establishment.
Later as they returned to the boat, the statement said, Morris decided to go
home while Wofford remained. Morris said he crossed the trestle and had reached
the span's south side when a train came across, causing him to jump off the
tracks to escape being hit. He proceeded along the tracks and another train
came along, he said Morris stated that he did not learn of Wofford's death
until 8:30 a.m. Sunday when he was informed by the dead man's father.
Deputy Stewart said that an inquest was held because there was no eyewitness to
the death. He commented that an investigation is continuing of the case to
determine the specific identity of the train.
Mr. Wofford was 32 years old.
The victim of the accident had lived in Albany for 11 years, having moved here
from Eastman. He was employed by the Flint River Cotton Mill.
Mr. Wofford is survived by his wife, the former Miss Anna Bray of Albany; one
daughter, Johanna, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. N. W. Wofford, Sr. of Albany; two
brothers, Noble Wofford of Valdosta and Paul Wofford of Greenville, Ala., a
sister Mrs. Opal Lamcolm of Albany and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted today at 4:30 p.m. in the Grace Methodist
Church by the Rev. C. E. Smith, pastor. Interment will follow in Riverside
Cemetery.
Pallbearers requested to meet at 4 p.m. include Jack Bierman, Carvin Cooper, L.
T. Bray, W. F. Hughes, Listern Carter and J. L. Mclin.
The Albany Undertaking Company is in charge of arrangements.
