Saffold, Ga.
Arriving aboard the CHATTAHOOCHEE, I found myself in a most congenial atmosphere: Capt. Jones and I have taken up life together where we left off years ago; the same happy relations are resumed. The other officers on this VESSEL are a splendid set; Some of them are SONS OF the OLD ARISTOCRACY, who are carrying on the traditions most creditably.
The CHATTAHOOCHEE is a strong wooden GUNBOAT of light draft and carries a battery of four broadsides, and two pivot guns--one forward, one aft.
The Confederate Naval Yard is located near by at Saffold, Ga. We go there often to visit at COL. JOHNSTON's hospitable domicile. MRS. JOHNSTON is a charming lady, and most understanding, for she invites the young ladies of the neighborhood to be present whilst we are there..This had relieved the monotony of our existence aboard ship, in a remarkable manner. Life has taken on a happy tone once more for me, and promises to "blossom like the rose"
AN EXCERPT FROM A RARE EDITION NAMED "HOPE BIDS ME ONWARD" dwells mostly on the career&romance of Mr. Gift that married Ellen Shackleford of "THE PINES" plantation in Early County and includes the family of THE MUNNERLYNS that lived on THE REFUGE.......during the CIVIL WAR.
