It is interesting to note that the Ebenezer Church served more than
Salzburgers and Georgians. Almost directly across the Savannah River in South Carolina
was the Swiss settlement of Purrysburg (which has several versions of
spelling), some of whose inhabitants were French speaking and some German speaking.
Many of the German speaking ones rowed across the river to attend services, be
baptized, and be married. So not all the German-appearing names in the book are
Salzburgers. For example, one of my wife's ancestors, Susannah Humbert,
married Johann Lohrman May 28, 1759 in the church (ironically, two of my ancestors,
John Cutler Braddock and Lucy Cook, stood at the same altar 10 years later).
According to the Journal of Rev. John Joachim Zubly, Susannah's siblings,
Sofia, Melchior and Catherine were baptized February 13, 1778.
