In 1823, Joel Sumner settled in what is now Rebecca and around 1872 Lawson
Smith settled there and the town was first named Grover. One story is that
Rebecca was named for the wife of Lawson Smith and another that it was for
Mrs. Rebecca Whatley, the wife of the railroad engineer.

My mother was born in Rebecca and her parents (now deceased) are George
William Perry Swain and Annie Hogan Swain.

Most everyone living in the area is kin to me on my mother or father's side
of the family in some way. I now live in Albany and my mother in Newton GA.

I will be glad to try and help you in your quest.

| Some time ago someone gave me some information on the family that settled
the
| hamlet of Rebecca, GA. All I can remember is that the town was named for
the
| founder's wife, but I cannot for the life of me remember who the "founder"
| was!
|
| At a Meeks reunion this past weekend in Douglas, GA, I met a sweet lady
whose
| mother - Grace Pearl Pearce - was from Rebecca. I'm trying to help my
| new-found cousin learn more about her Pearce, McCall, and Swain lines.
|
| Can anyone help??
