I could tell from your responses that many of you are
not really familiar with FGS. FGS stands for
Federation of Genealogical Societies. Its conference
is one of the top national conferences in the country.
One of the things that makes it unique is that it
provides educational opportunties (primarily through
its conference and publications) to genealogical
societies throughout the country. When a society
needs to know more about increasing membership,
improving its publications, etc., FGS is a resource to
which it can turn. I personally think that as
genealogists we need to be encouraging publication of
abstracts, indexes to county data, etc. whether it is
online or in a genealogical society's publication. I
believe that we as USGenWeb volunteers are more likely
to face an easy task of getting information for our
sites when there is an active genealogical society in
an area. FGS strengthens societies and that is why I
think it is important for USGenWeb (as an
organization) to join. I've already told Suzanne that
I think it is important.
