This is my problem my grandfathers name was suppose to be Charlie Ward his parents were Emma Mortis and Sam Ward.

Now Emma Mortis is listed on the 1880 census with two kids Sam and Susan Mortis but not Charlie who seems to be about the same age as the boy name Sam. Now my cousin who I only know online told me that some old lady told her that Charlie Ward had another name Mortis and that he went away and came back with the Ward name. My cousin did not know where the Mortis name came from.

I sent for Charlie Wards death certificate just by luck I guess when my mom told me he had died 10 years before she met my father and she met him 1950 so I guess 1941 and I was right. I got the certificate and it said his mother was Emma Mortis and his father Sam Ward and that he was born in White County in 1856.

However, we learned where the Mortis name came from but, there is no Sam Ward who was to be his father anywhere in Georgia at that time and Emma Mortis shows up only on that one Census record for Lumpkin county in 1880.

Now my father was Monroe Sam Anderson Ward and on the 1880 census the Andersons lived in the same location as Emma Mortis. Does she belong to that family or does Sam Ward the father.

Was Mortis Emma's maiden name or was she married to a man name Mortis and there are none of them in Georgia either at that time.

Did she change her name to Ward and if she did where and when?

How did most of the Ward sons have Andersen/Anderson on their records then remove it?

Is Emma a Andersen, Mortis or other?

What happened to Sam Mortis and Susan Mortis?

Where did Emma Mortis go she simply disapeared off all census records after 1880. Any help would be great
