The Henry County Weekly, April 8, 1932
MR. A. J. THOMASON CALLED BY DEATH
Relatives and friends of Andrew J. Thomason, 81, were shocked and grieved
to learn of his death which occurred early Friday morning, March 25, at the
residence of his daughter, Mrs. W. R. Turk, Route 4, following a brief illness.
Mr. Thomason returned Thursday from an extended visit to his daughter,
Mrs. Hulon Williams, of Tampa, Florida, and although he was in feeble health,
his death was unexpected.
The deceased was one of Jaspers most outstanding citizens and was
prominent in religious, civic and fraternal activities of the county for a long
number of years. He was born December 25, 1851. In 1879 he united with Bethel
Baptist Church, was ordained a Deacon in 1886, serving that church as such for
forty-six years.
Mr. Thomason was a Mason, having joined that order in 1877. He attended
the Grand Lodge of Georgia for twenty-eight years in succession. He was also a
Shriner, holding membership with the Al-Sihah Temple of Macon.
In 1880 he was united in marriage to Miss Sallie N. Digby, who preceded
him to the grave five years ago.
Mr. Thomason was a man of sterling character and was admired for his
devotion to his family and loyalty to his friends and neighbors. He gave freely
of his talents for the benefit of any one who needed his help and counsel and
in his passing the county has lost a valued citizen.
It is coincident that Mr. Thomason was born on Christ’s birthday
anniversary and died on good Friday and buried on Easter Day. Funeral services
were conducted from the Baptist Church Sunday afternoon at four o’clock, Rev.
W. B. Underwood, pastor, officiating, after which the interment was made in
West View Cemetery, with Masonic honors. Ray M. Persons was the undertaker in
charge of funeral and burial arrangements.
Surviving Mr. Thomason are the following children; C. C. Thomason, of
Brewster, Ohio; Mrs. R. O. Jackson, of McDonough, Ga.; Mrs. W. R. Turk, of
Monticello; Mrs. J. Hulon Williams, of Tampa, Florida; A. J. Thomason, Jr., of
Jacksonville, Fla.; one sister, Mrs. E. C. Ellis, of Atlanta; three brothers,
T. C. Thomason, of Bainbridge, Ga.; D. C. Thomason, of Monticello, Ga.; J. O.
Thomason, of Washington, D. C.; also seventeen grandchildren.
Among those from out-of-town attending the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. W.
O. Mosely, Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Greer, Messrs. E. M. Copeland, George C.
Alexander, A. W. Walker, of McDonough; Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Ellis, Mr. and Mrs.
Joe Stansel, Mr. and Mrs. Lawson Saye, Mr. Carl Ellis, Miss Ina Ellis, Mr. and
Mrs. Ervin Witt, Mr. and Mrs. Fulton Douglas, of Atlanta.
