Hello Gallagher family,
I am researching this Canadian family and still trying to find information
related to there departure from Ireland. Please E-mail me if you see any
connection to County Mayo or Fermanagh
Patrick Gallagher married to Elizabeth McKinnon ( Great-great grandparents
) lived in the County of Fermanagh, Ireland but, could have been originally
from Mayo. This family immigrated to North America in the early part of
1862. A story was passed down that Patrick and his six year old son Joseph
Thomas were unable to get passport to America from Northern Ireland because
of Brittish government regulations. Patrick, wearing womens clothing an
his son were able to board a Ship ( name unknown ) possibly leaving the
port at Londonderry and eventually landed in America at Bridgeport Conn. I
have been told that only small ships would have been ported to Bridgeport
in the early 1860's.
Joseph Thomas Gallagher, my ( great grandfather ), went by the name of
Thomas, born in Ireland on December 31,1856 died in Ontario, Canada on
August 24,1937 He and his parents landed in Bridgeport Conn. and then made
their way to Canada.( The American Civil War was just about to break out.)
The Canadian Census of 1901 indicates that they lived in Canada as of
1863. Hand written notes on an envelope show that Thomas and younger
brother Mike may have left Canada around 1882 at the age of 26 and 20 years
old. Mike was born on April 1,1862, date of death unknown. ( I am
currently looking for any Mike Gallaghers that made residence in either
Chicago, Ill. or the state of Montana ). They may have travled to New York
City and then to Buffalo, New York. Mike it is assumed continued to travel
west to Clevland, and Chicago, and possibly ending up in the state of
Montana. Thomas was in the Buffalo N.Y. for a short time in 1882-83 and
then headed back home to Canada. ( There is a large population of
Gallaghers and others of Irish decent currently living in the Buffalo area.
There may be a connection to one of these families ).
During the late 19th century much of the raw lumber for home and furniture
construction was imported from Canada to Buffalo through the Great Lakes
and later by railroad. Thomas may have ventured back north, seeking
employment, to the Canadian logging sites in central Ontario, eventually
he settled into the town of Sturgeon Falls, Ontario ( A lumber Mill-town on
the northern shore of Lake Nippising ). on July 28, 1888 he married Bridget
Matilda, Jewel ( age 16 years old ) born in 1872, who we know had at least
six children. Her fathers name was John Jewell ( American ) died on April
23, 1908 and mother was Mary ( Keenan ) Jewell. b. 1836 ( Cork, Ireland ).
died in 1899. The Jewell family were originally from the State of
Vermont. John and Mary lived in Pontiac County, Qubec, Canada in the town
of Chichester from 1871-1891.

Espanola. John was marriedin 1909, to Christine Mullins b. 1889, died in
Sturgeon Falls, Ontario1962 and they had nine children. ( Granny Gallaghers
