Subject: [GALLAGHER-L] ROLL CALL: GOLLAHER/ O'GALLAHER

OK-- Here is my genealogy from WILLIAM CULBERTSON GOLLAHER on back into Ireland
in the 1600s (Ballyshannon). This posting might be quite large, since it goes
back quite a way, and since I have also included some notes I have attached to
it at the end that may be of worth to someone.
REFERENCES: I did not personally accomplish this, but gleaned it from other
sources I believe are very reliable. Please note that there is no little amount
of confusion about various Thomas, James and John Gallaher /Gollaher /O'Gallaher
when you get back into Ireland. I would GREATLY welcome anyone who could shed
some light concerning the "TENNESSEE GOLLAHERS (GALLAHERS et al) and the
VIRGINIA, KENTUCKY and GEORGIA Gollahers, Gollihers, et al. I would welcome any
corrections, additions, etc.

[NOTES]
Occupation: Existing diaries and records list William as a
blacksmith, wheelwright, gunsmith and carpenter.
History: In 1838 he was in Far West MO, signed petition of redress
for property lost likely due to anti-Mormon mobs.Family oral history
says that he came to Nauvoo, Illinois probably to be closer to the
Mormon church, where he established a blacksmith shop in the local
village of Burton. It is unknown when he converted to the Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints ("Mormons") founded by Joseph
Smith, Jr. After anti-Mormon mobs martyred Joseph Smith and burned
the city, William took his family to Winters Quarters, and stayed
behind the first westward exodus of Mormon "saints" to ready wagons
for their voyage across the plains to the Great Salt Lake Valley.
Heading west with the Mormon pioneers in 1849 himself, he helped
found the town of Tooele, Utah, and served as one of its first mayors.
Early letters indicate all the "Gollaher Girls" had red hair.
.* ELIZABETH married EZRA TAFT BENSON, whose namesake descendant
would later become the 10th "prophet, seer and revelator" of the
ten million member world-wide church which had sprung up from the
small and persecuted sect which William had embraced. Among her
children were: Fred Gollaher Benson born 17 Jan 1855 in Tooele,
Tooele, Utah. D 6 Jan 1915. Fred married (1) Clara Jane Rice 29 Jul
1889. Fred also married (2) Mary E. Monroe on 1 Jan 1902. Mary was
born about 1855. Also: Lizzie Gollaher Benson(3) born 9 Jul 1869
and died 1 Aug 1946.
** Ancestor of comedian RED SKELTON.
*** Diary of William Foote (1817-1903)
**** MONROE as a given name: James Monroe Sr apparently
started a tradition of naming the eldest son MONROE that has
lasted until the present generation. The reason is a mystery, as
Monroe is not an Irish name (it is Scottish), and whose meaning
is very muddy. Most etymologies give its meanings as Moine-Ruadh,
moine being a marsh or swamp, and ruadh meaning red. Some say the
-roe refers to the river Roe in Ireland which seems unlikely as it
Monroe not an Irish name.

[NOTES]:
May have spelled name GOLLOHER.
Is thought to have joined Mormon church and moved with William to
Illinois. Reportedly returned to Kentucky to serve a mission, but
never returned. May have become discouraged in the faith and
stayed on in Kentucky with the Gollaher family in that area.

[NOTES]:
* (Thomas) Spelling variations known: Gollaher, Golliher. Most
history books list it as "Gollaher." Father to Benjamin Austin
Gollaher, who, while the family was living at Knob Creek, Kentucky,
was boyhood friend to Abraham Lincoln. Saved the seven-year old
Lincoln from drowning by fishing him out of swollen Knob Creek.
The Thomas Gollaher cabin logs were used to erect a replica of
Linclon's childhood home in 1931.

[NOTES]: This is apparently the ancestor who changed the spelling
of the surname to GOLLAHER from O'Gallaher, presumably in a vain
attempt to get Americans to pronounce it right. His father spelled
it O'Gallaher, as did all of his siblings. Due to his age, it is a
safe bet that Caleb left Ballyshannon single, and married Martha
after his arrival, as JONES is most decidedly NOT an Irish surname.
The Rebellion of 1745? and Cromwellian deprivations seem to be a
safe guess as to providing at least one major impetus to his
departure. Family oral history says he was in debtor's prison, and
took the five pounds the crown was offering to settle the English
colonies at the time and relieve the overcrowded prisons and settle
the colonies.

On BENJAMIN AUSTIN GOLLAHER:
----------------------------
Evidently my gggrandfather John David somehow thought William C.
was a brother to Benj., and included him in a family group sheet,
plus some interesting information on Benj. "Auston." (as he spelled
it). In his handwriting he notes of Benj. Austin: "Auston Gollaher
lived for 92 years. Died Feb 23, 1898. He married Polly Price, a
local girl, and had six children, three boys (Tom, Jim and George)
and three girls. Sons Tom and Jim Gollaher were drafted into Union
forces [during the Civil War]. Tom was later released from service,
having 12 children. Jim died in camp with yellow fever. George moved
to Missouri. Auston's great grand son lived in Louisville, Ky.
Austin's granddaughter, Mrs. Naneibelle Edlin, lived in Louisville,
Ky. When Austin was in his 70s his wife, Polly, died."
