Subject: [GALLAGHER-L] James Gallagher (Essex County, (N. Y. S.)
Date: Wed, 31 Mar 1999 09:09:14 EST
I have recently begun to do some research on my maternal grandmother's
ancestors (Mary Agnes Gallagher). Married name Mary Gile. Any information or
corrections in what I have would be greatly appreciated.
James Gallagher, Mary's father was born in Canada 12/1852 and immigrated
to N. Y. S. in 1869. His parents immigrated to Canada fom Ireland. Family
conversations several years ago indicate that they went to Canada sometime
between 1840 and 1850 fom County Donegal. It is thought that they settled in
P. Q. somewhere south of the St. Lawrence River, where James was born. I have
no information concerning possible brothers or sisters of James.
James married Ellen (or Ella) English who was born in N. Y. S. 8/1856.
Her father was born in Vermont and her mother was born in N. Y. S. James died
in 1921 at Minerva, N. Y. and she died at the same location in 1920.
Children of James and Ellen born in the Town of Newcomb, Essex County:
Ann(e) b ? died at age 3 years
Elizabeth b 2/1882
Franklyn b 5/1883
James b 2/1885
Ella b 9/1886
Mary b 12/1887
John b 3/1890
Claude b 12/1891
Margaret b 9/1893
William b 2/1896
Ann b 11/1897
Last year I searched the records at the Town Hall at Newcomb and could
not find any birth records of any of these children. However I did learn that
a fire several years ago destroyed many of the Town documents and these
records were among those that probably were destroyed. The information that I
do have was obtained from the "1900 Federal Census, New York State, Essex
County, Town of Newconb, Enumeraton District #48, Sheet #5"
Ann was not listed in that Census. I learned of her from a taped interview
between Michael Thompson and Claude Gallagher that took place in the mid
1960's. This interview was in coneection with a study being, by Michael, on
logging in the Adirondack mountains. I have tapes of those conversations (6
tapes). Some are very clear and others have a considerable amount of
distortion.
Whether all the children were born in the same location I do not know.
However, from James on, they were all born at the family farm which was
located between the hamlets of Upper and Lower Works on the road to Tawhaus in
the Town of Newcomb.
Mary b. 12/10/1887, my maternal grandmother, married Elmer George Gile b

day two years apart. Elmer died 11/3/27 at Syracuse, N. Y. Mary died
8/23/1944 at Ticonderoga, N, Y. They had one child. Margaret Lenore b
