Hello, Elizabeth.

I apologize for cross-posting to the GOLLAHER-L and GALLAHER-L
lists.

Interesting that the name GALLAHER was pronounced 'Goll-yer" in
your family. I knew many GOLLAHERs and GOLLIHERS had this
tradition, but have not heard of this pronunciation for GALLAHER.

Are there any other Gallahers who have (had) a tradition of
pronouncing the surname thusly? And if so, where does your
lineage take you?

My grandfather Monroe Lenard GOLLAHER changed the pronunciation of
the surname back to 'Gawl-a-her' from 'Gawl-yer' as it was
pronounced in southern Utah and back into Illinois. It was in
Illinois my ancestor William Culbertson Gollaher picked up this
unique pronunciation.

Concerning the Carthage Grays -- I have enough general history
concerning this period from the LDS Church archives you may be
interested in, but this is the first time I have heard of a
GALLAHER (et al) being a member of the Carthage Grays militia. It
is known there were two or three members of the Warsaw Militia who
participated in the martyrdom of Joseph Smith who were
Gallaher's. One was actually indicted for the murder of Joseph
and his brother Hyrum. According to a descendant I have become
friends with, he later took of for the west and ended up in
Washington state if I remember correctly. I have more information
(as do other members of the GALLAHER list) if anyone is
interested.

Intriguing, since my cousin Kerry Taylor found the name JOHN
GALLIHER - 1880 scrawled in axle grease (which etched into the
stone permanently) on a large rock in southern Idaho where the
Oregon Trail met up with the California trail. I have a photo I
can scan if there is demand. It was here that the trail parted
and a southern route took off towards Salt Lake City while the
northern route went north westward. Missourians generally did not
take the southerly route for any reason whatsoever considering
their recent history with the Mormons :D

He tells me he knows an early Galliher married a daughter of
BROWNING (of Browning Arms), whom we know my ancestor William
Culbertson GOLLAHER had an association with. Wm C. Gollaher
spelled his name GALLIHER at one point, and his father, James, was
known by that spelling in several church documents. James, btw,
returned to Kentucky where he died in Livingston some years
later. Wm. C. Gollaher went west with the Mormons in 1849 and
went on to found the city of Tooele where the family was based for
several generations.

I have always wondered how close the relation was to other
Gollahers, Gallahers, Gallihers, et al in Illinois and Missouri,
where he lived. There certainly is a tragic but exciting tale
entertwined which I would someday like to write!
