Dear Fellow Listers - I have watching quietly since joining the list three weeks or so ago. I have been amazed at the information that comes out on the list and the help everyone gives each other.
At this juncture, I wonder if someone might be able to help with the tracing of the origin of my Gallaghers in Ireland.
Some years ago I did a survey amongst the last surviving aunts/uncles in order to trace the place of origin of our family.. My Gallaghers arrived in CUMBRIA on the west coast of England about 1847/48. The head of the family was PETER(b. Ireland, approx. 1814), his wife's name is unknown but they had at least 3 children: MICHAEL(b.Ireland approx. 1834), FRANCIS(b. Ireland or England approx.1848 and my GT GRANDFATHER) and PETER(b. England approx.1850). There was also a JOSEPH who later became a priest?
When they arrived in Cumbria most became coal miners and lived near Maryport. Later they moved to the North East around SOUTH SHIELDS and continued as miners. My GT GRANDFATHER, FRANCIS GALLAGHER left the family(Leaving behind his wife and child, Peter{my grandfather}) and it is believed went off to the US possibly, Philadelphia? - he was never seen again. So possibly I have another family in the States?!
At one stage an aunt told me verbally that the family came from a place called BALLYGORAN - there is one in KILDARE. But the name could be a red herring - more likely they came from Mayo or Donegal or the North?
I hope very much that I can match my family up with that of a fellow lister. Is there a Gallagher reuion from time to time?
Many thanks and regards,
Derek Francis Gallagher(Medway, Kent, England)
