Alasdair, Just one more thing that may help you. The report of the sinking
should be in the Public Record Office (now National Archives) at Kew. The
Master should have made a report as soon as he arrived back in the UK after
the sinking. Such reports are kept under ADM199. If you ask them at the NA
they should be able to tell you whether the report exists, although you may
be charged £10 for the info and a copy of the report. £10 ia their minimum
charge.
