I have traduced our State Library.... they did indeed have the book you recommended and I found it extremely helpful.

Father wore the 1914 Star with silver rose, the British War Medal, the Victory Medal with Oakleaf Spray (now identified), the Military Medal and the French Croix de Guerre (identified by its ribbon).

According to the text, the rose is sometimes worn by mistake due to a misunderstanding but father was definitely entitled to it, having served on the Western Front from the outbreak of war (he was a regular). It also appears on his medal index card.

Also the Military Medal and the French Croix de Guerre could be awarded collectively and that is what I think happened. He came through the most bitter battles in the first months of the war and it's a miracle he survived and I need only to check with the Royal Fusiliers if the 4th Battalion was indeed awarded these honours.

I recognised too the Oakleaf Spray. The palm is much too big and indistinct and worn in the wrong place anyway. So I need to pursue the Mention in Despatches though how I'm to do that this far from Kew, God knows.

Many thanks for your guidance.

Kate
