Subject: [GALUMPKI] 1838 Lumpkin Co. State Census (Lookups offered)
Date: Sat, 26 Feb 2000 14:39:21 -0800

I have a transcription of the 1838 State census for Lumpkin County. It lists
the name of the head of household and then some numbers for persons in various
categories.

I will gladly do lookups for anyone interested.

Below is a statement by the transcriber which is included on the first page:

This state census report for Lumpkin County, 1838, is probably a fragment rather
than a complete return. Evidence for this conclusion includes the facts that it
contains some 45% fewer names than the county's tax digest of two years earlier
and that no totals appear on the final pages. The report apparently covers at
least portions of Districts 821, 830, 831, 836, 837, 838, 900, 916, and 935 and
omits 820 and 931. Unfortunately, the residents are not listed by district.

The Lumpkin County 1838 state census is available for viewing on microfilm at
the Georgia Department of Archives and History, Atlanta (Microfilm Library,
#146/25).

The data are presented in the following order:

Column 1 No. in each family
2 Free Persons of Colour
3 No. of Slaves
4 No. of Deaf
5 No. of Dumb
6 No. of Lunaticks
7 No. of male children between 6 & 16 years
8 No. of female children between 6 & 15 years
