Subject: 1855 Tax Digest Questions

In the 1855 Tax Digest of 1855 for Lumpkin Co., GA, which later became part
of Dawson Co., in December 1857, it lists Poll, Children, and Acres. I do
not understand what is meant by Pol; what is it? Why are so few (numbers of)
children listed? Is it children of a certain age? Is acreage only listed for
land owners but not for renters? What type of tax was this?
