Robin,

Thank you for your email. Until Charlton posted that the father of Robert
Gamble was Iasaiah born in 1755 in Virginia, the Robert Gamble born in
Virginia in 1780 was as far back as I could get the Gamble line. I had been
told that Isaiah "might" be the father of Robert by a woman who has done a
lot of genealogical research in Van Buren County, Tennessee, but she said to
"write it in pencil." Her name is Margaret Rhinehart, and she transcribed
the cemetery records of the county with genealogical notes in her book My
People--a remarkable book which is now out of print. My great uncle Rob
(also a Robert Gamble in this line) said that the family was from Scotland
and was forced to leave because they supported the wrong king. One would
assume this was either in the 1715 or 1745 rebellions, probably the latter,
but there is not proof of that. They were a warring lot and it could have
been an earlier time. They were Presbyterian when they came to Tennessee
and at one time in Van Buren County the Presbyterian congregation met in
Robert's home until a church could be built. Uncle Rob also said that in
each generation a son was named Robert and a daughter named Elizabeth.
There also was a James and a Samuel in each generation I know of, but Uncle
Rob didn't mention this. Unfortunately, by the time I started writing all
this down, Uncle Rob had died and my grandmother's mind had deteriorated
enough that she could not remember this. She did remember that her brother
Rob knew the family all the way back to Scotland. I think they may have
been sent to northern Ireland before they came to the U.S., but that is pure
speculation. One of our "cousins" believes they came to the U.S. from
Ireland. McGrady is a favorite middle name, especially used with James,
but I guess it could be either Scot or Irish. Another "cousin" believes
Robert (the 1780 one) went to a military school in Virginia, but I have not
had a chance to pursue that. If it is true, one would assume his brothers
also attended the same school and that might be a way to get at least some
of his siblings.

Hope this helps.

Best regards,
Carolyn
