MR. J. B. ACREE PASSES AWAY
End of Long Illness Came Friday And An Aged Citizen Goes To His Reward.
Mr John B. Acree, an aged and respected citizen of this county, was called to
his reward last Friday afternoon, after an illness which has confined him to
his home in this city for the past six or seven months. Mr. Acree had suffered
three strokes of paralysis and the last, which occured early in March this
year, rendered him practically helpless. Since then his loved ones have
attended him devotedly, knowing that it was only a question of a short while
until the final summons would come from the Master.
Friday afternoon he appeared a little better than usual. He was reclining in a
chair and his wife and Mrs. T. A. Acree were at his side. He indicated that he
wished to go to the shelf where the water bucket sat and as the colored nurse
lifted him up he seemed to experience difficulty in breathing. A moment later
it was seen that he was dying and in a few moments he had breathed his last.
Mr. Acree was in his 83rd year and the greater portion of his life had been
spent in the county. He was born in North Carolina, near Tar River, his
parents moving to Stewart County, Ga., when he was very young. Later they
moved to Dougherty county (then Baker) and soon afterward both is parents died,
leaving he and two other brothers. He had a hard struggle in early life as a
poor boy, but succeeded by hard work and wise management, and soon became a
well-to-do citizen, ammassing a snug fortune before the weight of years forced
him to withdraw from active business.
When about 22 years of age, he was married to Miss Rebecca Ivey, the faithful
wife, who was at his side when the final summons came. Eight children blessed
their union, seven of whom are now living.
Mr. Acree was a veteran of the Civil War, having given four years of faithful
service in the 51st Georgia Regiment. One of his brothers was killed in the
war, and the other, Mr. T. H. Acree, died at Newton, Ala. about two months ago.
Mr. Acree joined the Methodist church when quite young and his life was ever
consistent with its teachings.
The funeral services were conducted from the home Sunday afternoon, Rev.
R.McCullough, pastor of the Methodist church, officiating. Internment was made
in the New cemetery.
All of his children were present at the funeral. They were T. A. Acree; Mrs.
J. M. Mason, of Wrightsville; A. W. Acree, of Orlando, Fla.; W. G Acree, of
Savannah; J. C. and W. M Acree and Mrs. J. L. Brown, [of Camilla].
