My 3-great grandmother Abigail Blackshear Gill (we don't know if
Blackshear was her maiden name or a middle name) married my 3-great
grandfather Richard Welch probably around 1818, and so far as we know,
somewhere in NC. He is supposed to have been born in Iredell County,
but I have no information on her birthplace or where in NC they moved to
Thomas County GA from... Richard Welch died about 1862 and Abigail
subsequently married Parson Jonathan Merritt (again, we aren't sure if
Parson was a title or a name but it appears to me that the stone carver
took it to be a title). I'm not certain but I believe that they lived
in Decatur County but it was somewhere near the Thomas/Decatur County
line and is now in Grady County. They are buried at the Bethel United
Methodist Church at Reno, GA, south of Cairo.
Do you have any idea if Parson Jonathan is one of "your" Merritts and/or
do you have any further information about him?
