The thing is, though, that even the clearest and most specific documentary
evidence may be wrong.

I have a very funny (to me) story that some may enjoy:
Anna Jane THOMAS WEST stated in an affidavit given within her pension
application that Reverend CRUMADAY had performed the marriage ceremony in
Bladen Co., NC for her marriage to William WEST.
Beginning my NC research I was most anxious to locate the lands of Reverend
CRUMADAY in order to calculate where Anna Jane's family home might have
been. For weeks I poured over all extant documents (of that time period,
about 1810-1814-1820) without finding one single reference to anyone named
anything that remotely resembled the surname CRUMADAY/CRUMEDY including
other variant spellings.
One day in the Bladen Co., NC public library I overheard a group of people
discussing, of all things, a local CRUMEDY family. Injecting myself into
their conversation, I learned _the_ CRUMEDY family historian lived nearby
and loved to talk about family history. One of the group's members wrote out
the name, address and phone number of the CRUMEDY historian for me. Are you
ready for this last line?

Mr. CROMARTIE was the gentleman's name.

This certainly, for me, suggests viewing _all_ legal documents with an open
eye and mind.

Learning a bit about the local speech patterns/dialect also is a great help!

As a note of possible interest to other researchers: Eventually, I learned
that Anna Jane's marriage to William WEST was performed by James CROMARTIE,
J.P., rather than Reverend CRUMEDY.
