I found the article that was mentioned on the list a couple of weeks ago
concerning the Gantts of Virginia and in particular Henry Gantt's three
marriages to Weems girls. According to this 1905 article, Henry Gantt
married three times to two nieces and a daughter of Parson Weems. It
mentions Mary Weems, Willia (Williamina) Weems, and Nancy Weems. No Sarah
Howell Weems. So, she could have been a fourth marriage? married a
different Gantt? or the writer is mistaken about the names of the three
wives and she is one of the three.
Henry Gantt married Williamina Weems, dau of Wm Loch Weems of Prince
George's County MD 3 March 1798. He married Ann (Nancy) Ewell Weems, dau of
Mason Loch Weems of Price William County VA on 5 Apr 1824.
I don't know who the Mary Weems, the other supposed Weems wife is.
Sarah Howell Weems, dau of Richard of Anne Arundel County married Henry
Gantt 17 Oct 1801.
and was living in Jefferson County VA (now WV) in 1804. I'm not exactly
sure when Williamina Weems Gantt (above) died, but I believe she did die
before 1802. ( I need to research some more Chancery Court cases in which
she was involved to see if I can pinpoint this. ) This would at least
indicate whether it is possible for Henry to have married Sarah Howell Weems
after Williamina's death. If W. is still alive in Oct 1801, that probably
rules out its being the same Henry Gantt. But if it's not the same man,
it's probably a relative, seeing as they went back to Virginia to live.
Anyway, I've transcribed the whole text of the 1905 article and posted it on
the Gantt resources page
(http://resources.rootsweb.com/surnames/g/a/GANTT/). (Look under Bios at the
bottom of the page.) It is based on information from Octavia, daughter of
John Weems Gantt and the wife of his son, Mrs. Thomas Perkins Gantt.
Still not sure how Sarah Howell Weems fits in here, but I did notice that a
couple of John Weems Gantts grandchildren have the first name Howell.
Perhaps some of the Gantt researchers can shed some light.
