Thanks for passing this along. Could we try to find out what the writer's
source or sources are for this information? It sounds like this person does
have some documentation, since he mentions deeds with Sarah's name and knows
the detail about the eight weeks of mourning.

I do have another detail about one of Henry's daughters. Margaret
Wilhelmina Gantt, daughter of Henry married Dr. James Bonnell Carr Thornton
23 July 1823 at St. Osyth (Henry's estate)Prince George's County MD (I
think). (This place is mentioned in the Sun article). Margaret Wilhelmina
Gantt Thornton died 24 Oct 1823 in Dumfries, Prince William County VA, age
18. This would put her birth at 1805 and therefore probably a daughter of
Sarah Howell Weems. Information from the National Intelligencer newspaper,
marriage notice and obituary. She is identified as the daughter of Henry,
but her mother not specified.

I'm still having a hard time identifying Mary Weems. Wilhelmina was the
daughter of William Loch Weems, granddaughter of James Weems and Sarah
Parker Stoddert Weems (and btw therefore not a niece of Parson Weems as the
Sun article indicates, but oh, well.) Ann (Nancy) was the dau of Parson
Weems. But who was cousin Mary? I've been going back and looking at the
families of David and James' sons, but I don't see a Mary who would fit.

I've been trying to post this message since 4/21/2000. I kept getting this
error message: while talking to genealogy.org.:

I finally had to resubscribe to the List.

Hi Anne,

Henry Gantt's legal name was William Henry Gantt, which explains why he was
sometimes referred to as William. I looked through my neat and
well-organized piles of genealogy stuff (LOL) and came up with a few more
bits of information.

Henry was born about 1777. He married Mary Weems, who was born about 1779,
in 1797. She died January 1798, a month after giving birth to John Weems
Gantt. After eight weeks of mourning he married her cousin, Wilhelmina on
March 3, 1798 in Prince Georges Co., Md. (where his grandfather Thomas Gantt
lived). They had two daughters, Mary Gantt (Towson) and Willa Gantt
(Thornton). He then married Sarah Howell Weems on October 17, 1801 in Md.
Sarah's name appears on deeds signed in November 1802, 1806, 1807, and 1813.
I don't have a DOD for Sarah. I have seen a marriage date for Henry and
Nancy (Ann) Weems of April 5, 1824. She died in October, 1833. I have
Caesar Gantt and Albert Gantt as children of Henry and Ann. Caesar married
Rosa Prenss. Albert married Mary Elizabeth Jefferson, d/o Robert Lewis
Jefferson and Ann Moorman. Robert was the nephew of Pres. Thomas Jefferson.
On the LDS site there is a Wilhelmina Gantt born about 1813 who is
attributed
to William and Ann, but the dates don't work. Maybe she was the daughter of
Sarah, but I don't have any proof of that. I have a date of death for Henry
of 1837 but don't know what the source of that was.

I had heard about Henry winning the lottery, and I also knew he bought the
property in Albemarle Co. in 1813. I sure would like to see the Sun
article.

end of message

I noticed that the issue of Goodwin-Weems was in the first message I've
received in about one week. I don't suppose any new information has been
revealed by the Genealogy Fairy on Kitty Weems, has it?

Thanks,
Linda Cashen Gaunt
