Scottie,
I only have a bit of info. but quite interesting. From "Forebears and
Descendants of an Early Houston Family" by Mrs. Arch Bruce Marshall p.150
-151, 162
p.150 - 151
Thomas H. Thornton
b) 1843 Hinds Co., MS
Census 1850 Hinds Co., MS p.888 Thomas 6yrs. ( living with father and
seven sibs)
Census 1860 Hinds Co., MS p. 222, 27 Sept, P.O. Cayuga, Thomas 17 yrs,
with father and three sisters
Comment on p. 150 - "John Wesley Thornton's daughter stated that John Wesley
only had one brother, Thomas H. Thornton, who lived at Tyler TX. He
withdrew as a college student in Miss., enlisted in the Confederate Army and
was seriously wounded in 2nd Battle of Bull Run."
(My research has not taken me in this direction to document the military
comment concerning Thomas. I do not know if he died with the wounds or ever
married.)
p.162
1864 Sept 11, Jonesburrough, Georgia, A Letter to Thomas Henry Clay Thornton
from John Wesley Thornton
Dear Brother: As I have an opportunity of sending a letter across the
Mississippi River, I embrace it in writting you few lines. I am quite well
at present and have passed through the campaign thus far unhurt. You no
doubt have heard of the protracted campaign that appears to have closed for
a short while and terminated so unfavorable to our cause. Atlanta has
fallen and we have sustained quite a loss besides though while our loss is
great that of the enemy has greatly exceeded ours we have had a hard time of
it ever since my return and have come in for a double share of the fighting
a detailed account of of which from me would be uninteresting and I presume
you are as well informed of it as I am although I have been present all the
while. A private soldier here knows but little except what he sees and
feels. It is rumored in camps that there is an armistace for ten days
between Gen.'s Hood and Sherman at least it appears so to us for we have had
a few days quiet unaccompanied with bullets and bomb shells, a thing that
has not been since the first of May. Our command has had some of the
hardest fighting that we have had during the war. There has been four
killed and seven wounded in my old Co. since my return to the command
leaving but eighteen of us. Brother I have not recieved a line from you
since I parted with you. I have looked anxiously for a letter and would be
very glad to receive one soon. I have not heard from my wife and children
since I left and I am so anxious to hear from them. I received a letter
from sister Mollie a short time ago, they had not heard from you since I saw
you, they were very uneasy and anxious to hear from you. I saw John Ross
and John Wise a few days ago, they are well and send you their respect.
Mollie wrote all were well except some of sisters children. They were doing
well and had an abundance of fruit and mellons a thing I so much desire. I
have not tasted but one mellon this season and that I paid ten dollars for
such luxuries are impossible to get here, but God grant this hard and cruel
war may soon end and we may yet enjoy more of the beautiful blessings of
nature. Brother we have considerable talk of peace in the army here whether
or not we have good reasons to expect it is more than I can at present tell.
I presume the events that will transpire at the north during the next few
months will decide whether or not the war will continue next year. Dear
Brother I must close this with the request that you immediately write to
your affectionate Brother. J.W. Thornton
The spelling and punctuation are as they appear in the book.
I will continue to keep up with the research and post when something else
turns up.
Sincerely,
Nona Thornton
