Hi Doris -
I lurk and then I contribute. I am still waiting to hear about the list of those buried at the old Van Wert Church - and I am quiet because I just put up my own website - NOT genealogy for a change... and that has consumed my time. Plus I just offered to share some wonderful documents with the York kin from Randolph County, N.C. - and that will keep me busy for at least a week. A cousin went up to the N.C. Archives and to Randolph County, and photographed everything they could find on our York family - of course that didn't help us much since they found almost nothing on our direct kin. However, now I have over 100 photographed original documents, and before I delete them from my hard drive (I have them on CD), I offered to share them! I know - I asked for it... but what's a researcher to do? Share!
Anyway, obviously my Paulding/Polk family are the descendants of Josiah Cowan York b. 1799 Washington County, Tennessee, d. 1879 Polk County m. 10 Nov 1823 Roane County, Tenn., Sarah Blake b. 1806 Montgomery County, N.C. d. 1878 Polk County, Ga.
The Paulding County town of Yorkville is named after Josiah, who was several times magistrate and justice of the peace in Paulding, and also postmaster. A remarkable man, he went to Florida with the Tennessee Mounted Gunmen when he was 18, and was later awarded land in Van Wert, then Paulding, now Polk County, for his service. He raised his large family of 5 sons and 4 daughters in Paulding County, and is buried, with Sarah, in the cemetery at the Yorkville Methodist Church on land donated by his youngest son, A. H. York 'Hud', and his wife, Emma Wozencraft York.
Abraham Huddleston York 'Hud' was married 1st to Emma's older sister, Laura, and had one son, William Thomas 'Tom Bill', by her, but when she died, he married Emma who had been taking care of the child and her sister. Emma gave Hud 7 daughters (including my grandmother), and 1 son, and they are now buried at Van Wert.
It might be noted at all 5 of Josiah York's sons served with the 1st Calvary in the Civil War - one was killed, the oldest, William Thomas 'Tom Bill', so you will find a lot of York boys named for him.
I am in the process of gathering data in order to write a manuscript on this family, and have been working very seriously with several cousins trying to solve some of the mysteries and fill in some of the blanks - however we just created more blanks! in addition to finding remarkable information about the wild York boys of west Georgia!

This list certainly has been fairly quiet lately. I know some people just like to lurk, but if we're every going to make any connections or find out anything about our Paulding County relatives, there needs to be some posts to the list from you guys. It would be great if everyone would send a message to the list telling just a little about their Paulding County family and why they subscribed to the list.
Remember to give dates or time frame when your relatives were in Paulding County. And don't forget to change the subject line.
