:
: Hi fellow quiet Gardiners!
:
: Thought I might "stir something up" here (and I may live to regret
: this!). I am descended from the original Gardiners of Rhode Island and
: Herodias Long Hicks through several generations of William Gardiners
: down to William Watson Gardner (1772-1856) and his wife Jane St. John
: (1781-ca. 1856). The St. Johns are a Westchester County name. William
: Watson Gardner was the son of William Gardner and Sarah Watson (Sarah is
: the daughter of the very interesting Jeffrey Watson who left "the
: diary"). William and several brothers, including Elijah, and cousins,
: migrated from S. Kingstown to Rensselearville and Westerlo, Albany Co.,
: NY in the late 1790s.
:
: I have recently been in touch with the Westerlo town historian (who is
: also a Gardiner descendant, lucky!) and have been tracing William Watson
: Gardner's huge and prodigious family tree. He had about 13 children,
: some of whom (the male ones) moved out to Ohio and Iowa. I have the list
: of all of them and some effort has been made to track them down. Much
: of the information that was forwarded to me comes from diary records
: and family reunions so I am trying to sort it out. I also located a very
: impressive diary of the Methodist minister who served the "Gardner
: bunch" in Westerlo very early on in the 1830s. His notes on the family
: members who seemed to comprise most of the congregation are wonderful
: (it is in the collection of the NYG&B so I have just made pencil notes,
: no Xerox of it).
:
: I would love to be in touch with "cousins" so is anyone descended from
: the following people?
: Children of William Watson Gardner (1772-1855) b. S. Kingstown, RI, died
: Westerlo, NY, and Jane St. John (1781-1859) b. New Marlboro, NY, d.
: Westerlo, NY.
: 1. Sarah Gardner, m. Joshua Knowles, stayed in Westerlo area (1799-1870)
: 2. Matthew Allen Gardner, m. Rachel Britten, moved to Ohio (1801-1851)
: 3. Mary Gardner, m. Chester Skinner, mostly stayed in Westerlo area,
: some in Ohio, (1802-1892)
: 4. Bathsheba Gardner, d. unmarried (1805-1877)
: 5. Elizabeth Gardner. d. unmarried 91807-1861)
: 6. John Gardner
: 7. William Pellum Gardner, m. Sarah Champion, most of his descendants
: moved to Suffield, CT area (which coincidentally is where I am from but
: this is not my direct line). This was a huge line. Many descendants of
: him appear to live in the Suffield, CT/Springfield MA area (1811-1878)
: 8. Lucy Ann Gardner, m. Henry Washburn (this is my line), stayed in
: Westerlo area (1814-1848)
: 9. John Gardner, m. Priscilla Shaw, moved to Ohio (1816-1850)
: 10. Jemima Pellum Gardner, m. Joel Champion (brother of above Sarah
: Champion), moved to Ohio (1818-1911). This is another large line. Many
: descendants appear to live in the Perry or Cleveland areas of Ohio.
: 11. Joseph Addison Gardner, m. Evelyn Lobdell, moved to either Ohio or
: Iowa (BUT I MAY BE WRONG), (1821-1888). Had many descendants.
: 13. Jeffrey Watson Gardner, m. Sarah Brewster, moved away, I think to
: Iowa (I could be wrong) (1823-?)
:
: I am also trying to trace BACK the Gardner line hoping to clear up a few
: inconsistencies. Caroline Robinson Gardner's THE GARDNERS OF
: NARRAGANSETT has been the recommended source so I will use unless I hear
: some other advice. There are a few inconsistencies in the early 1700s,
: undoubtedly due to the fact that our family named every male known
: William Gardner.
:
: I am happy to share whatever information I have on these descendants.
: Just be in touch if you are out there!
:
: Cousin Catharine
