Looking for anyone who might have some knowledge of the Gardners of
Washington County, NY. Specifically I am looking for the parents of
Sylvester L. GARDNER. This is what I've been able to piece together on
Sylvester, but I would dearly like to connect him to earlier generations
of Gardners. So if anything in his biography below rings any bells,
please let me know... (I suspect he may be a descendant of the
Narregansett Gardners, because Sylvester was a given name frequently
used in that family, but I have no other evidence for that supposition).

Sylvester L. Gardner was born around 1814, in Hebron, New York
(according to the Oakwood Cemetary records). The 1855 New York Census
indicates that 'Silvester' Gardner had been a resident of Troy for
twenty-three years, which means that he arrived in Troy sometime around
1832 when he was eighteen years of age. The Troy City Directory does
not list him as a resident of Troy until 1847, though. The Directory
lists his occupation as a 'mason', and both the 1850 Census and the 1855
Census agree with that listing.

Syvester married a woman named Louisa Gilbert, daughter a James Gilbert
of Putnam County, NY. According to the 1850 Census (1850, TROY 7TH
REN265), Sylvester and Louisa Gardner had four children in the 1850
Census:
>1. Francis E. Gardner, b. 1838
>2. Laura E. Gardner, b. 1839 or 1840
>3. Mary L. Gardner, b. 1843
>4. Sylvester Nelson Gardner (ii), b. 1845

The 1855 New York Census (Troy 7th Ward) list a fifth child:
>5. Warren A. Gardner, b. March or April 1854, d. July 15, 1859 of scarlet fever (Oakwood Cemetery records).

New York's 1855 Census lists the following residents of the Gardner
household: Syvester, listed as being age 40, Louisa is age 34; their
children are listed as: Francis E. age 16, Belonia E. (Laura ?) is age
14, Mary Ann is age 12, Sylvester N. is age 10, Warren A. (?) is age 1
and 2/12. Their house is described as a frame house, and they are the
owners.

Sylvester L. Gardner died on November 12, 1869 (_Troy Daily Budget_: Nov
15, 4:7) of typhoid fever (Oakwood Cemetery records). Sylvester L.
Gardner is buried in Section S, Lot 84 of Troy's Oakwood Cemetery.
