Can someone on this list HELP. I am trying to sort out a Gardner family from
SC whose sons went to Montgomery co.,AL The direct ancestor was Stephen
Gardner b ca 1805.
I have an article published in "The Baptist Courier" by G.W. Gardner of
Jackson Ga Jan 1894. written about Rev. Elijah Gardner . In this he states
that he was asked by Rev. Whilden in preparing a history of SC Baptists. He
was a grandson of Elijah Gardner. He says that Elijah's father was William
Gardner of "Revolutionary fame" and that William came from Virginia just
before that war and settled in what was then called Darlington Dist. , that he
became a Baptist preacher and died after the war at Cedar Creek, Aiken So,SC
He also says that his sons were Elijah, James and Stephen and that James and
Stephen moved to Montgomery Co,
Ala about 1828 I found these two in the census of Montgomery Co along with
several others. I had found William, Stephen, etc. in Darlington in ,I thnk it
was 1810 and 1820 censuses.
The article goes on to say that some of the James and Stephen's descendants
moved on from Ala. to Miss. According to article Elijah was born Mar 11,1790
and goes on to say he preached in Aiken Co in Orangeburg and may be in
Lexington Co.
I have a copy of DAR papers for Rev. William Gardner-Matross during Rev. War.
It is well documented.
HOwever there are questions that spring out at me regarding this REv. Wm
Gardner and his sons. The DAR papers state he waas b ca 1745-54. Yet our
ancestor's birth was given as about 1805 and brother Elijah as 1790. Could
there be a missing generation there somewhere as William would have been about
50 when eldest son born. It is also stated that William's wife was a Miss
Draper. Who was she? His gravestone is marked in OLD Mount Hermon Baptist
Church Cem. in Aiken SC-I have a picture of that.
In research in SC there was found a NUN CLARK and THOMAS DRAPER sort of
connected with property that became some for John Gardner and Stephen Gardner.
Nun Clark's daughters m.arried Gardners. There was a Stephen Gardner who has
SC State Plac, Vol 25 p 246 for 52 acres dated 26 Aug 1790. This indicates
tome that there is a generation that comes between what is found for William
and what is found for sons Elijah and James and Stephen. Or that the sons
Stephen may have had son a son Stephen as well.
I have a number of documents mostly state plats for a Stephen Gardner and they
are all around there-some are dated in 1805 , aprox. year of birth of the
Stephen who went to Montg. Co ALA. There has to be a connection. Just need
some help. IS there anyone of this list that is working on Gardners of the
Darlington area.
Thanks in advance and apologize to list for such length but its needed to help
in clarification.
