Being LDS, I subscribe to a list called GEMS. This reference is
included in todays mailing. I thought it might help with the
confussion. I have forwarded it to all the lists I'm on because
everybody is interested on being able to use the site. The web
locations will give you the actual press releases.

In an announcement of the official Church webpage, LDS spokesmen
officially acknowledged plans to put genealogical information on the
web.
"Sometime in March or April 1999, The Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-day
Saints will conduct a brief beta test of a new genealogical service for
the Internet. The Church believes this service will greatly enhance the
way people trace their family history. A formal announcement and launch
is
expected in the spring or summer of 1999. Details will not be available
until then."
