Diana,
I didn't mean to imply that the Old Yellow Meeting House was their
church. Just that it was on the same road as their farm. Cornelius and
Mary (Garrison) Messlor are in fact buried on Emleys Hill, in the Methodist
churchyard. Vincent Messler was a Methodist minister who road the
circuit. He also performed many marriages in the area and was known for
that. The Monmouth Co. Historical Association has a copy of the list he
kept of the couples that he married. Some of his offspring, also became
Methodist ministers. I have seen the name of Garrison in lists of
Methodists for that area but I do not know if Lewis Garrison was
methodist. This may have started with his daughter Mary, but I do believe
that she was devout as she left two of her sons only $1.00 in her
will. The son that I am descended through was one of these. I found him
as a bartender on one of the census lists. I have often wondered if that
was his transgression. He later ran the Colts Neck Hotel for a while.
