Hey Jean,
The finding of a Civil War sword in the Tusculum area makes perfectly
good sense. The middle column of General W. T. Sherman's army followed
the eastern side of the Ogeechee River - travelling along what is now
Old Louisville Road and the RR track through that area (another, eastern
column passed through central Screven County while a western column
passed through eastern Bulloch County along the western side of the
Ogeechee). There were several battles or skirmishes along the eastern
side of the Ogeechee during the latter part of 1864. The communities
from Millen to Oliver recorded the presence of Union forces and the
conflict that occurred along that path followed by the Union army.
Well, that's my mostly Screven-centric view of what happened.
