Surname: Moore, Reaves

The family of Ussery Moore and Sarah Reaves
The first record that I have found on Ussery was his marriage to Sarah
"Sally" Reaves in Jones County GA on Nov. 26,1826. Next, their church membership
was recorded in the minutes of the Bethel-Horeb Primitive Baptist Church
in adjoining Talbot County ( formed in 1827) , "Ussery Moore - Received
by experience, Aug 9, 1828 - dismissed by letter Jan. 12, 1833. Sarah Moore
- Received by experience, Aug. 9, 1828 - dismissed by letter, Jan.9, 1830."
We know that Ussery had at least one brother named Simpson Moore, born
in 1811 because there is a document in which Simpson loaned Ussery, his
brother, some money. Simpson lived in Jones and Quitman counties.
In the first census of Talbot Co. in 1830, Ussery and Sarah were listed
in Captain Thomas Balleau's District one household away from Sarah's father,
Stephen Reaves, who was also a member of the Bethel-Horeb church.
In the 1840 census Ussery (spelled Usury) was listed in household #136,
no township listed, in Jones Co. In 1850 , still in Jones Co., he was a
farmer with $295 of real estate. He and all the children were born in Georgia
according to this census, and Sarah was born in North Carolina. William
H. was the oldest child listed at age 21 and a student. Samuel and James
were listed as laborers.
He was in the 1860 census of Taylor Co. GA along with many family members.
Taylor County had been formed in 1857 from Marion and Talbot. Perhaps the
family had not moved, and only the county line had changed. In this census,
his name was spelled "Ursery Moor." Ussery was still farming in 1860, with
real estate valued at $550. Sons William H. Moore and Stephen Romulus Moore
lived in adjacent houses with their families and now worked for the railroad.
In the 1863 Military Census of Taylor Co. GA, Ussery was listed as being
age 56 and a farmer.
During the Civil War, five of Ussery and Sarah's sons served the Confederacy
as privates. Three enlisted in Taylor Co. in Co. "G", 6th GA Inf. Reg,
the "Butler Vanguards", part of the Army of the Tennessee which saw many
terrible battles in the Valley Campaign. James U. Moore died in College
Hospital in Lynchburg, VA, on Jan. 27, 1863. It is likely that he died
from wounds or illness from the Battle of Fredricksburg, VA in which his
unit was involved on Jan. 14-17. He was buried in No. 4, first line, lot
187. He was twenty-seven.
Another son Stephen Romulus Moore enlisted June 24, 1861in the Butler Vanguards.
He was discharged at Richmond, VA on Nov. 9, 1861, after only 5 months
service. In the 1863 Military Census of Taylor Co., Stephen was listed
a farmer, age 24, and disabled- no doubt from wounds or illness suffered
in the service.
Yet another son fought under the flag of the CSA . Bishop M. Moore enlisted
on May 27, 1861in the Butler Vanguards with his brothers. He was discharged
on Nov. 25, 1861. It is possible that he (at age 16) was considered too
young to enlist at the beginning of the war. At any rate, he reenlisted
on May 6, 1862 in adjoining Marion Co. in Co. "G", 49th GA Inf. Reg. and
was killed at the Battle of Gettysburg on July 2, 1863. He was 18 years
old.
Bishop's older brother, Robert S. Moore, age 24, enlisted as a private
the same day in the Marion Company. He was appointed sergeant . Rolls show
him absent from his company from July 1864 - Feb. 1865 on detatched service
to the Government Shops in Richmond, VA.
Son William H. Moore, age 33, enlisted in Taylor Co. in Co. "F", 27th GA
Inf. Reg., the "Taylor Guards", a part of the Army of Northern VA, on May
22, 1862. He was on detatched duty at Richmond, VA, 1863- Apr. 30, 1864.
He was in Macon, GA hospital on Feb. 20, 1865, with chronic rheumatism.
In "The Quitman Echo" , a history of Quitman Co. GA, by Jacquelyn Shepard,
in an article on pgs. 101-102, the Simpson Moore family, Ussery's brother,
is detailed by Evelyn Clifton and S. C. Moore of Atlanta . "Jones Co. GA
was laid out by the State of GA into 202 and 1/2 acre lots. From meager
beginnings Simpson and Cynthia acquired a very substantial land holding
in Jones Co. At one time Simpson owned all of Lot #58 and 50 acres of #73
in the Sixth Dst. He also owned 50 acres of #47, all of Lot #46, and an
additional 60 acres of #47. A part of Lot #47 was also owned by Samuel
J. Moore. At the time of his death, he owned Ussery Moore's land in Taylor
Co., GA, having taken a mortgage for his brother in 1869. It was a part
of Simpson Moore's estate in 1883."
In the 1870 census of Taylor Co., the family still lived in the Panhandle
District, fairly close together. Bishop's widow, Martha, and small children
lived with Ussery and Sarah. This time it was Stephen and Lewis who had
homes adjacent to their parents. Robert lived in the county , too, but
not with the family group. William was no longer in Taylor Co.
In the 1880 census of Taylor Co., Butler GA, "Usey" Moore was listed as
70 years old, born in GA, as were his parents. His wife, "Sally" is 65,
and she and her family also came from GA ( not NC) in this census. They
were living next door to son Alexander. This is the last record that I
have of Ussery. I assume that he died there.
