Message Board Post:

I am looking for information regarding a Polly (?) Sykes who married
Martin McCann. McCann is variously seen as Mccann, Mccahn, McCanna,
McCan, McCanse, McKan, McKean, Mchan, Macann, Machann, McCain, Cann,
Cane, Cain, Kane, Kean - and on and on ad infinitim. Polly could very
well be a nickname. Martin could be a middle name or variously spelled
Marten, Martien, etc. I have been looking for this for 20 years so if
you have anything that even remotely resembles this it would be
gratefully appreciated. It could be misspelled. Names could be reversed
ie McCann Martin, etc. We believe that Martin was born in NC approx.
1799. It is rumored that he was born in Duplin County but I have no
verification of that. He served in the Seminole Indian War of 1818. He
was awarded Bounty Land for his service. He won a land lottery in
Jackson County, GA in 1827. His occupation is shown as soldier. We
find him with his family on the Jackson County, GA 1830 Census. The
1830 census o!
nly gives the name of the heads of household but it does list a female
of the appropriate age and two children who's ages would be close to
that of the two oldest children. There is also a woman in the household
age 50-60 who could be either his or her mother. The family could have
been residing on either the property won in the lottery or the property
alloted for his Seminole War Service between the time it was awarded and
where we next find him 1840 but I have no idea where the properties
were. We next find Martin and children on the 1840 census in Early /
Randolph / Stewart County, GA area census. There is no wife listed. He
later marries Lucretia Pool. Lucretia applies for Martin's pension and
in the pension states his previous wife's name was Polly Sykes,
deceased. This is the only info we have on the first wife any where,
any time. The children were Hugh, James, Charles, William, Algerine,
Charlotte (name not confirmed). If you have anything that even remote!
ly resembles this I would most gratefully appreciate the information.

Lynn
