Margaret Hogan BROWN b VA married Jacob STEWART b VA and their
son Perry STEWART was b 1856 on the Rifle Point Plantation in
Louisiana where they were slaves owned by Lemuel P. CONNER and
the plantation was listed in his brother's name W.G. (William
Gustine) CONNER. Lemuel P. Conner lived in Adams County, MS and
was a MS delegate to the constitutional convention for the
Confederate States of America. He also served as a LT. COL. on
the command staff of Gen. Braxton Bragg in the Army of TN, CSA.
The Conners sent their slaves to TX to keep them out of the
hands of the Union Troops from their plantations in MS and LA.
They started a second Rifle Point Plantation somewhere in TX. I
have viewed the Lemuel P. Conner papers on Microfilm which are a
part of the Ante-Bellum Southern Plantation Records collection.
There were lists of the names of the slaves taken from some of
the plantations. The Rifle Point Plantation records were not
among them. It might be possible that these records were taken
to TX. The lists I viewed were written by another of Conner's
brothers, Farrar Benjamin CONNER. I have found that by
researching the slaveholder's families that I find out more
about the slaves. I need someone who is familiar with TX to help
in locating the Rifle Point Plantation that was (or is) there;
somewhere. There was some mention of the Brazos River on some of
Farrar Conner's lists sent to his brother, Lemuel. An
interesting story is that I discovered a paragraph in a book
which stated that Lemuel Conner went bankrupt and since he was
also a lawyer he wounded up working in his son's office in LA.
His son, Lemuel Jr, was also a lawyer. Perry Stewart married
Louisa GAILLIARD and their son, Benjamin C. STEWART b Sep 5,
1888, was my mother's father and it was in his house that I grew
up.
