"British Settlers in Natal 1824-1857; A Biographical Register, Vol. 1
Abbott-Ayres", by Shelagh O'Byrrne Spencer, 1981. BIG Hardback book,
INDEXED, 11.5" x 8.5", 128 pages in GOOD CONDITION, illustrated & with
maps. It was the dream of riches to be won from the ivory trade the first
lured British hunter-traders to Port Natal in 1824 (to South Africa from
Britain). This colorful band of adventurers was augmented by a steady
trickle of fortune-seekers, missionaries and traders who made their way to
Natal from the Cape Colony. Once British rule was firmly established in
1845, schemes were set in motion by Joseph BYRNE and others to bring
permanent settlers from Britain to develop the new territory and under
their auspices several thousand emigrants had come to new homes in Natal
by the end of 1857. Who were they? How did they come? Where did they
settle? Whom did they marry? Who were their children? Answers are here in
this book which contains the biographies of 93 of these early Natalians. A
GREAT reference book that will serve interests in genealogy as well as
historians and the exploration of European expansion and colonization in
not only South Africa but also Britain's former colonies of settlement!
The biographies included are from Abbott-Ayres but a more complete listing
of names with some births are also included. Contents also include
"Immigrant vessels"; "Related surnames"; "Roll of British settlers in
Natal, 1824-1857"; "Source List", etc. The "British Settlers in Natal,
1824-1857" includes ALL NAMES, not just the A's and is complete at the
time of this book going to press; this list includes 16 pages consisting
of this list of names, some with birth dates! GREAT Reference book!
