BMDs in England didn't start until 1837, so a lot would depend on whether he
lived long enough to qualify. There's no John Johnsons in the first 10 years
of deaths on FreeBMD. Do remember that England does not equal Britain, if he
ended up in Scotland, BMDs didn't start until 1855.
Searching on "slaves" in the National Archives of the UK generated loads of
hits (slavery has attracted a lot of interest from the archives this year
because of the big anniversary, so it's worth hunting around):
