Hi all

In the Pre-Reformation (ie Roman Catholic) Church, and later in the Church
of England, a Rector was the patron or pastor/clergyman of a parish who was
entitled to the "Great Tithes" , ie "the tenth part of the increase annually
arising from the profits of land or stock, alloted to the clergy" (church).
This was rarely an individual, but more commonly an institutional, or
individual patron, (ie the Lord of tha Manor, or in the early days a
monastery, and latterly the Chapter of a Diocese). A Vicar ('vicarius' in
Latin) was the priest appointed by the patron in absentia, to look after the
parish, who was entitled to the "Small Tithes" or a salary. (Canon Law).

Volgens mij is een vicarius vooral een plaatsvervanger... op allerlei
niveau's. Zo heb je ook een vicarius in een parochie die plaatsvervanger van
de pastoor is. Het is wel altijd een geestelijke, die dus niet gehuwd kan
zijn.

Maar misschien heeft de pastoor vicarius vertaald, terwijl vicar terug gaat
naar de engelse betekenis. En daar zijn in de Anglicaanse kerk de priesters
wel gehuwd. Weet je of de man van engeland afkomstig is? Vissing kan immers
ook een vertaling van een engelse naam zijn.
