I checked the 1880 US census, online at the LDS site. There is a
registration of John Haan in Muskegon, Michigan, by the time 11 years
old, so this could match with your estimation he was born around 1869.
Montague (MI) Where John Haan got married is only a couple of miles
North of Muskegon. I think this must be your grandfather.

The head of this family was John Haan (50) presumably John's father.
He was born in Holland in 1830

Jan, Johan or Johannes (de) Haan is a common name in the Netherlands.
There is a good chance that he came from the province of Friesland.
