MERCADO (David) was met doctor Jacob de Pas (zie het art.) een der
portugeesche Joden, met wien de kampensche stadsraad op 5 Februari
1661 een overeenkomst aanging tot vestiging van een portugeesch-
joodsche gemeente in deze voor den doorvoerhandel zoo gunstig gelegen
stad. De ‘verscheiden familiën’ zouden ook een synagoge in een hunner
huizen mogen oprichten. De belemmerende bepalingen maakten echter den
bloei van deze eenige portugeesche gemeente in het oosten van ons land
onmogelijk.

MERCADO (Mozes Israël de), leerling van den opperrabbijn Saul Levy
Morteira, schreef een commentaar op de psalmen: Comento conceptuoso
del Psatterio y del Sacro Ecclesiastes. Hij overleed op zeer jeugdigen
leeftijd te Amsterdam in 1652; zijn werk werd daarna uitgegeven door
Jacob Mercado (Amsterdam 1653). Abraham de Mercado was een portugeesch-
joodsche arts te Amsterdam, die aldaar omstr. 1655 overleed, Samuel de
Mercado, eveneens arts, een tijdgenoot van opperrabbijn Jacob
Sasportas (1610-1698), welke hem een rabbinale decisie zond.
