THE OHIO VALLEY SAFFORDS, Revised, Enlarged and Continued to 1932 by
Sidney Methiot Culbertson. Denver: The Kistler Press, 1932. 8vo. VG/No
Jacket. Hardcover. “Originally compiled in 1895 by Reginald Heber Smith
and Sidney Methiot Culbertson From the Notes and Researches of Judge
William Harrison Safford and his son William Edwin Safford.” Black
boards with gilt leaf edging shows minimal wear, light soiling to top
edge of leaves and pages lightly tanned; this is a very nice solid copy.
In the preface the author explains the origins of the first 24-page
pamphlet that he and Reginald Heber Smith compiled in 1895. This hard to
find volume is a more extensive work which concentrates on the
descendats of two brothers, Robert and Dr. Jonas Safford. Their
immigrant ancestor was Thomas Safford of Ipswich, Massachusetts. Robert
Safford (1768-1863) and Dr. Jonas Safford (1763-1834) were the sons of
Challis Safford and Lydia WARNER of Harpswich, Massachusetts; the two
brother eventually settled in southern Ohio. Part one consists of twelve
generations of Saffords beginning with Thomas Safford and contains
births, marriages, deaths, etc. Part two is an interesting narrative on
the Safford descendants, and contains items such as military service,
occupation, travel and other incidents of historical interest. Book is
well organized and well written. $153.00 plus $3.00 shipping
