Someplace in the email program, there are options. one of
which lets you set the frequency that it will check for new
e-mail, and another that tells it whether to dial in or not
if it is not already connected. (with MS Outlook Express,
they are in the "Tools" menu)

It is more a function of the email program than the modem.
