Thanks for this MS website,Lance. I have the SP2 disc but have
delayed installing it after hearing, on TV, the horror stories
that some people have experienced.
One of the best tips for everyone: "When all else fails, READ THE
INSTRUCTIONS!" (Preferably first and not after disaster has
already struck)...............

: Kathryn, despite your problems and the rather dubious advice to
uninstall
: SP2, you will need it at some stage in the future - probably
sooner than
: later.
:
: What has most likely happened is that you did not run through
the check-list
: of what steps you needed to take BEFORE installing SP2.
Microsoft has a
: helpful site in this regard:
: You may also care to read the information on this site on what
to look for
: when installing SP2 and after it is installed:
:
: The other thing that probably caused innumerable problems for
you was that
: you sound as though you installed it while "everything" was
running on your
: computer - right? Never install any program unless you have
shut down all
: running programs and more particularly while attempting such a
huge change
: to your operating system like SP2 is.
:
: What I suggest you do is obtain the SP2 update on a CD. It is
readily
: available on many free cd's which come with computer magazines.
I noticed in
: Officeworks the other day they had free copies to give away in
their
: computer section, so if you have one near you, pop in there. If
not
: available locally you can order a copy from Microsoft for free:
: Actually, it is a wise idea to have it on CD in case you ever
have to do a
: complete re-install of Windows in the future.
:
: Once you have the CD, follow the steps on the above site, and
then close
: down all the running programs on your computer. You can do this
quickly and
: effectively by using EndItAll which is free from:
: You will find it is the tenth item listed on that page (a handy
program to
: run before you do DEFRAG, by the way). When all bar essential
processes are
: closed down then you can proceed with the SP2 install.
:
: There are so many important changes contained in SP2 that are
vital for your
: computer's security, it would be unwise to head into the future
without it
: installed. Everyone with Windows XP should have it installed.

:
: Hello Listers,
:
: Just thought I'd share an experience with you, someone else may
be having
: the same problems. Recently I clicked yes to Microsofts offer
to upgrade my
: XP. Until the job was done, I did not know I was agreeing to
take on SP2.
: From the minute it had loaded I had nothing but trouble with my
email and
: internet access. If I could get into either one of these, they
dropped out
: in a few minutes. After many calls to Bigpond, someone
suggested it could be
: SP2. Once I figured out how to delete same, all started to work
well as
: usual. Fortunately it did not affect my Family Tree Maker
program. So if
: you too are having problems like I had, trying uninstalling
SP2.
:
: Regards,
: Kathryn
