Grace,
depends on the local administration I think. I wrote to the Standesamt
(registry office) in Hamburg to get the death certificate of my
gggrandfather. They wanted to have fotocopies of the birth
certificates from me, my mother, my grandmother and my ggrandmother to
prove that I am related to him. At that time I didn't have all these
documents and I sent them an outprint of my family tree showing the
direct lineage. They still refused to send me the document I wanted to
have. A few months later I had all those documents and sent them
copies of it and THEN they mailed me the death certificate. There are
other places in Germany where it is absolutely easy to get the
documents you want. Best would be to write to them, tell them about
your wishes and then wait what will happen. If there any difficulties
to get what you want you will find a lot of help in this newsgroup.
Good luck with your research.
