: Any info on Horn surname in the Hamburg/Rensburg area???
: Also, Tietz.
Horn is a common geographical feature and occurs alone and as part of many
place and family names: It means SWAMP as in marshy, low lying, wooded
area, not as in peatbog. In Hamburg, you will find the suburbs Horneburg
and Langenhorn. There also is a Langenhorn by Rendsburg. In the case of
Hamburg, we were told that HORN was the name of an old forest on the North
side, the long Horn. Horneburg is named after a fortification on the South
side, in the Elbe river marshes.
Tietz is simply a short form of Dietrich, kinda like TEDDY.
Linguistically, it is not rooted in Northern Germany but fairly common
anyway. No specific area.
Bottom line: You need more info to pinpoint your research area.
Good luck!
Jef
