Dear John,
thanks for your mail - I hope you don't mind if I post this to the
mailing list : some of the following information might be of general
interest.
You had enquired about the origin of the family names BORNSCHEIN and
PANHORST. The book to look for in such a case has been written by Josef
Karlmann Brechenmacher "Etymologisches Woerterbuch der Deutschen
Familiennamen", published in 2 volumes by Starke Verlag, Limburg/Lahn
1957-63; as the title indicates - it's in German.
BORNSCHEIN is connected to a localisation : "Born" is another word for
"Brunnen" (well), "schein" is connected with "erscheinen" (to appear) -
so the first Bornschein are likely to have lived near a well.
Brechenmacher also gives the numbers of families from the address books
of the major German towns during the 1920/30ies : Munich (1), Pirmasens
(1), Frankfurt/Main (1), Jena (15), Berlin (32) and Aachen (1). The most
famous member of the family seems to have been the poet Johann Ernst
Daniel Bornschein from Prettin near Merseburg.
PANHORST/PANNHORST is more like a nickname : it's derived from the
Westfalian dish "Pannharst" made with meet and/or bacon, fried in a pan
("Pfanne") - a bit similar to "Leberkaes" - my wife is from the Ruhr
area and still remembers it from her childhood (and she's younger than I
am - which is close to 50). I had already given you the numbers.
I have further checked the "Forscherkontakte" - several entries
Bornschein and Christian, but neither close to your region, and
therefore not worth writing a letter; there are no entries Panhorst.
So what could you do next ? I am not familiar with family research in
the Koeln region - you better get in touch with a local genealogical
society : see
http://www.genealogy.com/gene/www/ghlp/verbaende.html
for addresses. Unless he is too busy to answer other questions like
yours, it might be faster to ask Dr. Junkers
<> for hints where to find more data. There
are always the microfilms and IGI available from the Mormones, ofcourse
- I assume you have enquired there already.
I hope this helps at least a bit and wish good luck with your further
research.
Best regards
Wolf
